Dennis Goldsmith, holding the 2010 Best of Boston issue of Boston Magazine, is a fitness instructor at the Jewish Community Center in Marblehead.

Dennis Goldsmith, a longtime fitness instructor at the Jewish Community Center in Marblehead, has been named one of the Best of Boston by Boston Magazine.

Goldsmith, who also teaches in Boston, is listed as first runner-up in the Best Group Exercise Instructor category for the 2010 edition of the magazine's annual list.

At the JCC, Goldsmith offers personal training in addition to his classes of Body Pump and Yoga. According to students who frequent his class, Goldsmith has the type of attitude and energy needed to lead a class with a smile and enthusiasm.

At the Marblehead JCC, Goldsmith leads his class with a smile and enthusiasm.

“He’s got great energy,” says Marci Alpern, who takes Body Pump. “He makes it fun and it’s a great workout.”

Added fellow student Eileen Laband, “I always feel stronger after his workout.”

Goldsmith has a master's degree from Harvard in counseling and consulting psychology and he worked with troubled teens for years before getting into fitness.  He is also a fourth degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do and a certified personal trainer. He lives in Cambridge and commutes to Marblehead a few times a week to teach.

“It’s a long drive, but I love it here at the JCC,” Goldsmith said. “All my students are so warm and so energetic. I come here for the people!”

Goldsmith’s classes are free for JCC members and $10 for non-members. This fall, he’ll also be teaching Kickboxing and Tae Kwon Do. For more information, check out the JCC’s Fall Guide at www.jccns.org.
