During the Marblehead Board of Selectmen meeting last night, a resident raised concerns over paving regulations in town.

According to Marblehead bylaws, cement is to be used to connect driveways to the street. Dodge Road resident Alan Chipman requested the board grant him permission to use pavers at the end of his driveway.

A paver is typically constructed of concrete or brick and is pre-cast to be used for driveways and sidewalks. According to Chipman, and the presentation he made to the board, pavers are stronger than the concrete used for sidewalks in Marblehead and therefore safer because tree branches are less likely to crack the sidewalk and become a hazard to pedestrians.

Chipman claims a number of Marblehead homes already use pavers and he and his contractor showed pictures of homes with pavers to the board.

The town bylaws permitting the use of cement for sidewalks are in place to make transportation as easy as possible for the disabled. The Marblehead Disabilities Committee, which currently does not support the use of pavers, works throughout town to make the lives of the disabled less difficult.

According to the board, the Marblehead homes currently using pavers are in violation of the bylaws and the board members unanimously voted not to grant Chipman’s permit.
