The following was submitted by the Massachusetts Interlocal Insurance Association:

According to the Massachusetts Interlocal Insurance Association, Marblehead’s insurance provider, the town’s commitment to keeping the community safer and fiscally stronger has earned it $33,696 back on its property casualty insurance costs.

Marblehead gained the credits through participation in loss prevention and risk management activities that are part of incentive programs offered by MIIA. The insurance credits were earned through participation in MIIA-sponsored activities over the course of the year. The loss control measures implemented by MIIA, which reduce the risk of accidents and property damage, increase productivity and improve effective management and operations.

MIIA offers training and educational courses as a membership benefit to help members reduce their risks and insurance premiums. In fiscal year 2011 alone, MIIA awarded over $2.4 million of premium credit collectively to the membership through its rewards program, for a nine-year total of $14.7 million.

Marblehead managers participated in several seminars on management and leadership, including investigating internal complaints and discriminatory harassment prevention training using guidelines from the Mass. Commission Against Discrimination. Employees attended programs to enhance safety in the workplace and mitigate risk of injuries, such as tree risk assessment and confined space entry and rescue for safety working in sewers, manholes, and trenches.

The town also established a no-texting and limited cell phone use policy for town employees when driving. To reduce municipal building property damage, the town implemented a Property Conservation Program and conducted regular inspections of roofs, indoor air quality, pipe freeze-up prevention and a Sanitary Sewer Overflow Prevention Program.

Several of the MIIA training programs were offered as webinars over computers, which enabled employees to learn from the convenience of their offices without incurring travel time.

MIIA is the non-profit insurance arm of the Massachusetts Municipal Association. MIIA insures nearly 400 cities, towns and other public entities in Massachusetts.
