Marblehead's Me & Thee to host singer-songwriter Kim Richey April 20
The following was submitted by me&thee coffeehouse:
On Friday, April 20, the me&thee welcomes Kim Richey to its stage. For fifteen years Kim Richey has been releasing album after album of joyful, original and heartfelt music which have earned her Grammy nominations, number 1 spots in the US and praise from top music press including Rolling Stone. Opening is Melissa Greener, who is one of those rare artists who appear on the scene with all their talents maturely developed. Blessed with a glorious, outsized, and utterly distinctive voice, Greener is an accomplished guitarist and an arresting songwriter. Doors open at 7:30 PM for this 8:00 PM show at the me&thee coffeehouse which is located at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Marblehead at 28 Mugford Street.
Two-time Grammy-nominated Kim Richey is a storyteller; a weaver of emotions and a tugger of heartstrings. Tender, poetic and aching with life's truths, Kim's songs transport you to her world, where words paint pictures and melodies touch the soul. And then there's her voice. Pure, arresting and honest, her voice makes you take notice; Kim has the kind of voice where if emotions were ribbons, they'd be streaming in rainbow colors from your iPod. Her voice gives you goose bumps. The 15-year musical journey that has led Kim to her latest album, Wreck Your Wheels has been a dream run. Aside from her two Grammy nods, she has released five critically acclaimed albums; been listed in the Top 10 Albums of 1999 in Time Magazine for her album Glimmer, and been given 4 stars in Rolling Stone and named Alt-Country Album of the Year in People Magazine for her album Rise. She has written two Number 1s and four Top 10 hits and has had other singles in the Top 50. She has had her songs recorded by the likes of Trisha Yearwood and James Morrison among others; sung on albums by Ryan Adams, Shawn Colvin and Mary Chapin Carpenter and even appeared on a William Shatner record produced by Ben Folds.. Kim's sixth album, Wreck Your Wheels is a return to her more Americana roots. Heading back to Nashville to record with her touring band, this album was all about getting an organic, real sound: no auto-tune, no studio tricks - just five musicians in a room, playing together.
Somewhere in between a deep dark-holler, a Texas road-house and a Manhattan bound F-Train, you'll find singer-songwriter Melissa Greener, picking a guitar and singing her truth. Inspired by modernist poets & literate folk singers, Greener's songs are exquisitely crafted portraits of the human condition – hers and ours. Melodic, rhythmic and quirky, they captivate with dynamic ranges and moody tones, in a unique language all her own. Growing up with an intoxicating potion of Motown, crooner tunes and 60’s Laurel Canyon folkies, Greener’s signature phrasing evolved. By way of a classically trained soprano mother, who sang in the lounge of the Playboy Club in Detroit, and a socialist hippie father, a unique and beautiful brew emerged. Ever after the next adventure, Greener has trekked mountain ranges in the Alps, Slovakia and Tibet. She’s pedaled a bicycle across Canada and lived in a rural village in China. Her current adventure is a full time schedule of international touring, performing in theaters, festivals and house concerts alike. Greener's sophomore release, Dwelling, was helmed by acclaimed producer John Jennings (Mary Chapin Carpenter) and has won awards and glowing reviews throughout the music industry. Fall From the Sky, her debut release, continues to receive attention from an international music community.
Tickets for the performance by Kim Richey with Melissa Greener opening are $20 in advance and $23 at the door. Tickets are available online at www.meanthee.org and can be purchased in person in Marblehead at either the Spirit of ’76 Bookstore or the Arnould Gallery As at all me & thee coffeehouse events, refreshments are available, including homemade pastries, coffee, and teas.
