The following was submitted by the Marblehead All-Sports Foundation:

MARBLEHEAD – Sensing an opportunity to bring together broad community support, the associated love of sports and the desire to improve existing facilities was the driving force behind the creation of the Marblehead All-Sports Foundation. The enthusiasm for this coordinated effort has been impressive with support coming from the Selectmen, School Committee, the Park and Recreation Department, the Athletic Department and from youth soccer, football, lacrosse, and field hockey. A true team effort!

The goal of the Foundation is to provide privately raised funds for much needed improvements to the town's fields and related athletic infrastructure. Future projects may include a new track, additional turf fields, and general improvements to the existing grass playing fields.

The Foundation was formed by members of the community including leaders of youth sport organizations, educators, and representatives of the local government. The Foundation plans to build a sustaining organization that can provide funding for projects large and small for many years to come.

"It has become increasingly difficult to secure public funds for these types of projects and we felt there was a clear need for an alternative," said MASF committee member Steve Maxwell.

The Piper Field is a natural first step as today it is significantly underutilized, has ample parking, offers spacious fan accommodations, and has access to locker and restroom facilities. Most importantly, Piper Field gives the town the biggest bang for the buck.  The new turf field yields a 15 fold increase in available hours from 160 per year to 2,340 hours of total use. (Hours per day x lighted environment x all weather-all season x lined for multiple sports) And yes, the new Piper Field will be available to all youth sports via an open and transparent allocation process.

The Foundation and its recently announced capital campaign has a goal of raising $1.3 million over the next six months with an immediate need to raise $500,000 over the next three months.  An ambitious goal yes, but together the funding for this “Field of Dreams” can be achieved if everyone does their part. If all goes according to plan, the two to three month field construction effort will start June of 2013. The good news is that there will be no interruption in seasonal sports.

The importance of this project is obviously huge. "This is a complete game changer for our teams," said Marblehead High School Athletic Director Mark Tarmey.

The campaign is going to be a very focused effort aimed directly at individuals who are passionate over Marblehead Sports, have children actively benefiting from all the various programs, and are enthusiastic over improving the long-term quality of our facilities.
