A former Marblehead school administrator is free on $2,500 cash bail after his arraignment on multiple charges, including carrying a firearm while intoxicated, operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol (second offense) negligent operation of a motor vehicle and marked lanes violation.

Kevin Meagher, 47, of Saugus, pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Lynn District Court on the charges which came after he was stopped by police in Marblehead Monday night. He was ordered to refrain from drinking alcoholic beverages and to forfeit any weapons he has.

Marblehead Superintendent Greg Maass said this week that after being arrested, Meagher resigned from his post as interim business manager with the school system. When contacted for a comment, Meagher said he is not taking any calls at this time.

Marblehead police Officer Daniel Katz reported that Meagher was arrested Monday at approximately 8:14 p.m. Katz said he had to abruptly pull his cruiser over to the right side of Atlantic Avenue near CVS Pharmacy to avoid getting hit by Meagher’s white Ford Expedition. Meagher was driving 45 mpg in a 20 mph zone, according to the officer.

According to Katz’s report, he immediately turned around and put on his blue lights in pursuit of Meagher’s vehicle. Meagher pulled over around the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and Ocean Avenue.

“Meagher had trouble locating his license in his wallet,” Katz said in his report. “It took him approximately 60 seconds to obtain his license from his wallet. He dropped his wallet on his lap several times before locating it. After finding his license and handing it to me, I asked him again for his registration. He was slow to respond to my request.”

Katz said in his report that Meagher’s speech was slurred, his eyes were glossy and bloodshot, and a strong odor of alcoholic beverage was coming from his breath.

A second policeman, Officer Christopher Adkerson, arrived at the scene as Katz asked Meagher to step out of his vehicle and submit to field sobriety tests and a portable breathalyzer test (PBT). Meagher refused both. Adkerson asked Meagher to take a PBT and field sobriety test, Katz’s report said, both of which he also refused.

As Katz placed Meagher under arrest Adkerson noticed a knife in the center console of the car. Meagher also had a knife in his front pocket and, according to Katz's report, as Adkerson searched Meagher, the officer discovered a loaded handgun in a holster in the suspect's right front pocket.

Katz then transported Meagher to the Marblehead Police Station for booking.

The former school administrator is scheduled for a pretrial hearing on March 13 in Lynn District Court.
