In an achievement that represents a community coming together, the town of Marblehead will open the doors to its long-awaited new teen center.

The new center aims to create a vibrant resource that offers teenagers life guidance; constructive self-development opportunities; and a safe, fun gathering place to be independent.

A celebratory kickoff for the new center will take place on Tuesday, April 23, from 5 to 9 p.m. at The Landing restaurant on Front Street. 20 percent of all proceeds in the dining room will go to Marblehead for Teens.

The new teen center, which is located in the Marblehead Community Center on Humphrey Street, will have its big opening on Friday April 26. All Marbleheaders are welcome to the community open house from 5 to 7 p.m., followed by the first high school teen night from 7 to 10:30 p.m.

Teens in grades 9 through 12 can enjoy live music, food, and drinks hosted by the Teen Leadership Council.

Various factors have contributed to the opening, including weekly meetings with the Teen Leadership Council; support staff donated by the Lynch-van Otterloo YMCA; and a collaboration between the Jewish Community Center, Lynch-van Otterloo YMCA, Marblehead Recreation and Parks Department. and Marblehead for Teens.

The Teen Center will begin operating on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., and one to two Friday nights per month from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m., with a revised summer schedule.

The center will include comfortable furniture, a fridge, and media, all donated by individuals and businesses. Teens involved with the project also have designed a very cool lounge, entertainment, café, and study space.
