The deadline for the executive director position for the Mattapan Square Main Streets ended April 30, but those within the group are talking about extending the deadline.

Boston Main Streets is a federally funded, citywide program that works to revitalize commercial districts through a combination of technical, financial, and design support. In November 2010, the city officially accepted Mattapan's application to become a recognized Main Streets District.

There are 20 Main Streets groups citywide.

According to Brian McPherson, vice president of the Mattapan Square Main Street’s Board and the chair of the committee to find an executive director, of the 20 applications the group received for the position only four of those were from Massachusetts, with only one from the Boston area.

“We got a lot of out-of-town applications and we want to be more aggressive in finding someone from the community to fill the position,” said McPherson. “We want more local folks to apply and we want to increase the number of applications we get.”

The new deadline for applications has been set for May 21.

To better get the word out about the position McPherson said the group will look to distribute the application and job description through local websites and publications.

The group will also meet on Monday to discuss the application process. The public meeting will be held at 6:00 p.m. at the MBTA Transit Police Station located at the Mattapan Square T Stop.
