Renovations to the wading pool at Ryan Playground in Mattapan are expected to end just in time for summer, according to the Department of Conservation and Recreation.

The estimated $650,000 worth of improvements to the DCR-managed facility, include major renovations to the wading pool, the installation of a spray deck and park amenities, and the revamping of mechanical systems and existing infrastructure.

Prior to the work a single wading pool in disrepair existed at the site along with basketball and tennis courts, a playground, bathhouse, and ball field.

Designs for the water feature, provided by DCR, show an integrated spray deck and an 18-inch deep wading pool as well as new shaded seating areas and tree plantings.

Six picnic tables will also be added to the site along with 14 new benches near the tennis and basketball courts. Asphalt cracks on the courts will be repaired and one “Big Belly” trash compactor will be installed in addition to two traditional trash receptacles.

The bathhouse at the site will also receive a fresh coat of paint.

Located along River Street and the Neponset River Reservation, the approximately five-acre park is also home to a portion of the Neponset River Greenway, which was recently cleared courtesy of some local youth.
