Mattapan Square is now home to a brand new café.

The Blue House of Coffee, located at 1553 Blue Hill Ave., swung open its doors to customers Monday, welcoming the community into the recently renovated space.

Serving both coffee and artisan coffee drinks, in addition to breakfast pastries and other homemade selections, the husband and wife owners said they are excited to offer something different to the area.

“I’ve been in the square almost 30-years, I’ve seen things come and go,” said Calixte Dorisca, who also owns Calixte Dorisca Insurance, which is located in the same building. "People wanted somewhere to sit and talk and have their coffee.”

With a 17-seat table area, Wi-Fi, and a café atmosphere, the new coffee shop offers something not found in many of the square’s businesses.

While some shops have moved out of the square or are locating their businesses in other neighborhoods, Dorisca and his wife Betsy said it wasn’t a hard decision to open another business in the bustling square, which also recently welcomed a new health center.

“The square is a neighborhood. It has that feeling,” said Dorisca, who came to this country in 1979 from Haiti. “If you want something to change you have to work for it.”

Dorisca said he has also hired four employees from the area to help keep everything running smoothly at the shop.

Hours are still being worked out by the entrepreneurs, but Dorisca said the shop will most likely be open from 6 a.m. – 4 p.m. during the week and from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. on the weekends.
