Charles Yancey was reelected to his 16th term as the District 4 city councilor after taking close to two-thirds of the votes cast in Tuesday’s municipal election.

District 4 includes portions of Mattapan as well as Dorchester.

With close to 68 percent of the 11,914 votes cast Yancey, a Roxbury native who resides in Dorchester, sailed to victory over challenger Terrance Williams, according to the unofficial election results provided by the Boston Elections Department.

Williams, a Dorchester resident and Boston Water and Sewer Commission employee, won nearly 31 percent of the votes cast Tuesday.

Yancey, who has been on the council since 1983 and is the longest sitting councilor, will serve a two-year term. The next municipal election is set for 2015.
