Buckley new DPW commissioner
Mayor Michael J. McGlynn recently appointed John J. ‘‘Jack’’ Buckley as public works commissioner. He succeeds Paul Gere, who retired June 30 after 35 years with the department, the last 12 as commissioner.
Buckley had been the city’s superintendent of school buildings since 2005. Before that, he served as the city’s project manager for the construction of five school buildings from 1998-2004, and as deputy commissioner of public works from 1997-98. He also served on the School Committee.
‘‘It was an easy pick,’’ McGlynn said. ‘‘When I looked at the qualities Paul Gere possessed and I looked for someone to replace him, Jack Buckley was that person.’’
McGlynn, meanwhile tapped Gere to work on a part-time basis as the city’s chief resident engineer on road projects funded through the federal stimulus law.
