The neighborhood group West Medford Community Spirit is bringing back the Labor Day Weekend cookout at Dugger Park for the second year in a row, after a four-decade hiatus.

“We’re trying to revitalize the neighborhood,” said Spirit member John Reid. He remembers attending Labor Day events at the park as a child, when the West Medford Community Center sponsored the gatherings.

While the center stopped holding Labor Day events about 40 years ago, Reid said, the staff will provide water for Sunday’s event and make bathrooms available for attendees.

“The whole thing is geared toward children,” he said.

The festivities include pony rides; face painting; an inflatable jumping house; a basketball tournament; and plenty of food. A dunk tank will also be on hand, for anyone looking to cool off. Most activities will cost $1.

About 200 people attended last year’s event, and Reid expects even more this weekend, “because the word has gotten around.”

“It’s great, it really is,” he said. “When I grew up here we had this all the time. The adults have fun too.”

While a rain date is scheduled for Monday, Reid expects clear skies on Sunday after a peek at the extended forecast.

“From what I’ve seen, it’s supposed to be a good day,” he said.

The celebration runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday and is open to all city residents.
