A pedestrian was killed after being struck by a car around 6:30 p.m. Thursday on Route 28 North in Medford.

According to state police reports, Brian J. Fountain, 33, of Saugus was driving a 2003 BMW X5 on the Fellsway near Fourth Street when he struck a pedestrian in the right lane.

Fountain was not injured. The pedestrian, Brian F. Staunton, 53, of Medford, was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital where he later died, said Massachusetts State Police Sergeant Matthew Murray.

This stretch of roadway is especially prone to accidents, although incidents involving pedestrians are rare, said Medford Deputy Fire Chief Steve Howe.

“You have a lot of business in that area and there are vehicles coming in and out plus it’s also residential,” he said. “There’s a whole conglomerate of uses.”

Route 28 was closed for three hours after the crash so police could investigate and reconstruct the accident. Police are still analyzing evidence to determine a cause and if Fountain will face any charges, Murray said.

Anyone with information on the crash should contact Trooper Marcel Strain at the Medford State Police Barracks at (781) 396-0100.
