The School Department is seeking a few good MCAS tutors.

The School Department is hiring part-time staffers to tutor students struggling with the MCAS, a state achievement test.

High school students must score proficient or higher in three MCAS areas - language arts, math, and science - in order to graduate. Students who fall below the benchmark in their sophomore year can retake the test as juniors and seniors. In some cases, students can graduate after providing evidence of working toward improvement.

Last spring, 77 percent of Medford sophomores scored proficient or higher in the language section, compared to the state average of 81 percent. Proficiency rates were at 70 percent for math and 52 percent for science, versus state averages of 75 percent and 61 percent, respectively.

The tutors will work with some students who missed proficiency on the language and math sections, according to a notice on the School Department website. Sessions will be held after school and on Saturdays.

Tutors must be licensed teachers, and a license in language arts and/or math is preferred, the notice says. Pay is $33 per hour, and includes planning time.

Applicants should submit letters of interest to the School Department by Dec. 3.
