Medford public schools are closed today as a fresh layer of snow, as much as 8 inches in some places, is expected to fall before 2 p.m., forecasts say.

The city declared a snow emergency effective at 12 a.m. today, as a powerful but brief storm blew into the region overnight and began dumping more of the powdery white stuff around 3 a.m., according to forecasts.

The National Weather Service placed most of the state, except for the Cape and islands, under a Winter Storm Warning.

By the time the precipitation stops this afternoon, Greater Boston will have received more than 3 feet of snow this year in many places.

Medford police reported no major accidents or obstacles as of 10:30 a.m., the department said.
