Drivers might be wise to avoid Interstate 93 north of Boston tonight.
Traffic on the highway between Stoneham and Somerville will be rerouted tonight, in a rehearsal of the traffic plan that will be used on weekends this summer while 14 bridges on I-93 in Medford are replaced, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation said.
The traffic rerouting will begin at 8 p.m. By 10 p.m., the northbound side will be completely closed off, said Adam Hurtubise, spokesman for the department. Instead, two lanes of northbound traffic will be switched over to the southbound side of the highway, which will also carry two lanes traveling south, he said.
We want to make sure that this crossover will work for the final project, Hurtubise said.
Northbound and southbound traffic will be separated by a movable zipper line barrier, he said. By 5 a.m. Saturday traffic patterns will be returned to normal.
