Medford's Bui wins $5,000 scholarship

Medford resident and senior at Pope John XXIII High School, Theresa Bui, was awarded a $5,000 scholarship from Distrigas at the Distrigas Visitors Center in Everett. The following was submitted by Distrigas of Massachusetts:

Distrigas of Massachusetts recently honored 24 students, primarily from Everett, and also Medford and Lexington, for their academic success and outstanding work in the field of science.

Students, along with their families and educators, were recognized at an awards dinner held in their honor at the Distrigas Visitor Center in Everett. Distrigas has been sponsoring the local scholarship program and science fair competition for more than 30 years.
 
“Given the importance of science to our natural gas business, we believe it’s important to support students who show initiative, creativity, and a commitment to science,” said Carol Churchill, manager of Communications for Distrigas.  “The students we’re honoring have shown innovation, academic achievement, and an interest in understanding the world around them.” 
 
Distrigas awarded $5,000 scholarships to two students -- Thao Mary Tran of Everett High School and Theresa Bui of Pope John XXIII High School, a Medford resident.  Both students are graduating seniors who have impressive records of academic achievement and extracurricular involvement.  Bui will attend Boston University.
 
In addition, Distrigas awarded over $2,200 in prizes for student science fair projects:
 
The Region IV State Science Fair winners included: 

First Place Winners – Erica Budina of Medford High School and Eugenia Kim of Lexington High School

Third Place Winners – Matthew Arbesfeld and Benjamin Edelstein of Lexington High School

Honorable Mention Winner – Rebecca Merriman of Everett High School
                                                
The Everett High School Science Fair winners included:

First Place Winner – Rebecca Merriman

Second Place Winners – Kylie Jepson and Camila DeFreitas

Third Place Winners – Ahmo Mehmedovic and Luis Henriquez-Perez.
 
The Everett Grade Seven and Eight City-Wide Science Fair winners included:

First Place Winner – Brendan Jefferson of the Parlin School

Second Place Winner – Zachary Griffin of the Whittier School

Third Place Winners – Ricardo Balduino, Nezar Lila, and Muhammad Sheikh of the English school, and Ambra Kadiu and Alisha Simon of the Keverian school.
 
The Everett Grade Six City-Wide Science Fair winners included:

First Place Winners – Calvin Amaral and Renzo Marins of the English school, and Adam Charfi of the Parlin School

Second Place Winner – Christopher Boucher of the Lafayette school

Third Place Winners – Conor Rachlin of the Lafayette school and Arsalan Ghazali of the Parlin School.
