Christopher Bucknam receives his award from headmaster Paul Krueger at the pre-Thanksgiving game pep rally.

Medford Mustangs offensive guard Christopher Bucknam has been named the state's student-athlete of the month, said Paul Krueger, high school headmaster.

The award, given by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association and the New England Sports Network, honors Bucknam's leadership. It is the first time a Medford student has been recognized.

In the classroom, Bucknam is respectful to teachers and his peers, participates frequently in class discussions, and displays courage in his dealings with others. Recently, Bucknam met with the school's Gay Straight Alliance on behalf of the football team, giving a speech that won him the praise of the several dozen in attendance, Krueger wrote.

The speech was in support of one of the team's players, who had come out to his teammates.

Bucknam is also the "voice of Medford High," making morning announcents over the public address system.
