LYNN - The Medford High boys' soccer team's quest for a  state title ended today on a 1-0 loss in double overtime to Masconomet Regional High School in the semifinal game of the state Division 1 North soccer tournament.

Charles Sherman, a junior striker for Masco, scored on a direct kick against Medford goalie Bryan Peguero three minutes into the second overtime in the game played at Manning Field. The kick came off a penalty after a Masco player tripped over Peguero after he fell on a ball to stop a Masco goal.

Masco advances to the the Division 1 North final game, scheduled for noon here on Sunday,  against Billerica, which topped Chelsea in the other semifinal matchup, 4-2.

Medford Coach Mike Petrides said the loss on a penalty kick was a hard to swallow. "I never like to see a game end on a referee's call," an emotional Petrides said, as his players somberly walked to the team bus. "But it happens."

Peguero, a junior, shut out the Chieftains during regulation. But the Mustangs could not land the ball in the net. Senior Forward John Dumbuya,  tightly covered by at least two Chieftains for most of the game,  nearly scored from the 40 yard line eight minutes into the first half, but the ball struck the cross bar.

With time running out in the second half, senior defender Jean Joseph struck from the 18 yard line, but the ball went wide of the net.

"We just couldn't finish our plays," Petrides said.

The Mustangs, who finished 12-5-1, were the tournament's number 10 seed. But they won twice on the road, beating seventh-seeded Chelmsford, 1-0, last Saturday, and then stunning second-seeded, previously unbeaten Lincoln-Sudbury, 2-1, in overtime Wednesday.

In the three games, the only goals on Pegeuro came on penalty kicks. And the last one, with the season on the line, hurt the most.

"It's a tough, tough way to lose," Petrides said. "But I am very proud of our team. They played their hearts out."
