The latest from Medford photographer George McLean:


"I have been cruising the Mystic watching the eagles and Red-tailed Hawks, looking for that 'one picture.'

"I watched four Red-tails circling near the dam. I looked around so I wouldnt hurt anyone's ears and gaven my hawk whistle. One of the birds dropped down to see what the strange sound was, and as he did he dropped his talons [click]. He was still a good ways up, but I got the message: 'Back off or else.'

Here is bird that I photographed, then went online to identify. It's a rare variant of  the orange house finch, the same day I photographed the ruby finch, my first. [coming atractions]
