Medford photographer George McLean shares an up close and personal encounter with Ruby the hawk:

"Have you ever seen a dog, cat, or wild turkey study its image in a reflective surface?

"This great Red-tailed hawk female, 'Ruby,' has a place in my heart. I have spent many hours with her over the past two years, taken thousands of pictures.

"Every now and then, she will run back and forth on a girder and study her image in the window on the building at Alewife Parkway.  A year ago, she at first would fly full speed with talons forward to 'skewer' the other hawk. Many times after crashing into the window and limping away (click), I thought she was injured. But after a while, she learned the other hawk  was harmless.

"My thoughts are she is checking  her makeup. After all, spring is in the air, with thoughts of love, and she has rendezvous with her mate, the great "Lord Buzz,"  king of the Red tails in the area.

"The local falcon family has challenged the Red tails family, and there is aerial combat going on to see who will control the skies above. Sounds like a soap opera."
