Verizon TV, Internet services up and running in Medford

Verizon high-speed Internet and digital cable television services are now available in Medford, Verizon said today.

The announcement comes more than a week after Medford Mayor Michael J. McGlynn signed a franchise agreement with the telecom giant.

Outside of satellite companies, Verizon's FiOS TV will be the first competition to Comcast.

"Consumers and small businesses in Medford, at long last, have a better choice for TV," said Susan M. Retta, vice president of consumer and mass business markets for Verizon.

“We’ve had great success in FiOS communities throughout Massachusetts. Now it’s time to bring FiOS TV to Medford and provide customers a choice that is truly different from the cable TV company."

Previously, Verizon intended to wire all of Medford with fiber-optic connections, running miles of the cabling and building infrastructure. But Verizon executives halted the work before all homes in the city were upgraded.

Currently about a quarter of residents, mostly located on the West side of the city, cannot buy or receive FiOS service.
