The Professional Golf Association of America selected Medford High School junior Allyson Mollung to attend a prestigious golf academy in Port Lucie, Fla., the school said Friday.
Mollung, a varsity team member, will attend the Ryder Cup Junior Academy. An essay she wrote was chosen as the winner by the New England PGA.
“Allyson has been a pleasure to coach for the past three years and as a senior next year, I am expecting a great season from her," said Medford golf coach Ray Dyer. "I depend a great deal on Allyson, who sets a great example for the younger members of the team. She will be hard to replace when she graduates."
She will join 81 others from around the country -- 41 boys and 40 other girls -- at the academy, where Mollung will be taught by top golf professionals.
The seven-day program is slated for July, and will cover the intricacies of swing mechanics, strategy, and shot-making, taught by members of the US Ryder Cup, an all-star team of American golfers that compete against players from Europe in an semi-annual tournament.
The 2012 Ryder Cup will be held Sept. 25-30 at Medinah (Ill.) Country Club. Davis Love 3d is the Team USA captain.
