Medford woman gives birth after getting stuck on Route 16
A Medford mother is in good condition after going into premature labor this afternoon in gridlocked Route 16 traffic, State Police said.
State Police said they received a frantic call around 1:30 p.m. from a woman who was in labor while stuck in Medford traffic due to a traffic light outage at Wellington Circle. Three troopers from the Medford barracks set out on foot to locate the vehicle in the traffic.
They were able to locate the vehicle even after briefly losing contact with the caller’s cellphone and directed the car to the barracks parking lot. When troopers opened the back door to the vehicle, they discovered that the baby girl had already been born.
After ensuring the baby was breathing, they wrapped her in blankets until the arrival of Medford emergency medical workers. The mother and child were later transported to Massachusetts General Hospital by ambulance with a State Police escort.
