The office of Middlesex Sheriff Peter Koutoujian has canceled three community visits scheduled for Wednesday after a pre-dawn crash in Billerica involving a sheriff's department vehicle left one person dead.

"Due to a situation that arose this morning the sheriff's public events were canceled today," his office said.

Koutoujian was slated to visit Youth Public Safety Academy camps in Belmont, Medford, and Somerville, where dozens of local youth participate in a weeklong program administered by the sheriff's department in close cooperation with local police and fire departments.

By 9 a.m., scant details were available on the crash, which was reported about 4 a.m., according to the Associated Press.
