A Medford Fire Lieutenant on paid leave following an assault charge is slated to face a city disciplinary hearing Wednesday, according to city officials.

Paul Spencer, 56, has been on paid leave since he was arrested while off-duty on Oct. 14 following an incident at his Howard Road home. Spencer allegedly beat another man about the head with a pair of electrical pliers following an argument in his basement.

City Finance Director Stephanie Burke will oversee Wednesday's hearing, which is not open to the public, City Solicitor Mark Rumley said Tuesday. The hearing was delayed last week due to a scheduling conflict, he said.

After hearing from Spencer's attorney and Fire Chief Frank Giliberti, Burke is expected to offer recommended punishment to Mayor Michael McGlynn, Rumley said.

"The decision ultimately lies with the Mayor," he said.

The hearing will be held at 9:30 a.m., Rumley said.
