A Medford Fire Department Lieutenant awaits possible punishment after a disciplinary hearing Wednesday.

Paul Spencer, 56, has been on paid leave since Oct. 14, when he was arrested while off-duty and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Spencer allegedly beat another man about the head with electrical pliers following an argument in his basement.

The hearing, held behind closed doors, was overseen by city Budget Director Stephanie Burke. It's now up to Burke to recommended punishment - if any -  to Mayor Michael McGlynn, City Solicitor Mark Rumley said Wednesday. It typically takes about a week for a recommendation to be made, Rumley said.

Leah Barrault, a labor law attorney representing Spencer, did not immediately return a call seeking comment Wednesday.
