A Medford Fire Department lieutenant faces a disciplinary hearing Friday stemming from an incident in which he allegedly beat another man with a pair of electrical pliers.

Paul Spencer, 56, was placed on paid leave days after he was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on the night of Oct. 15, Fire Chief Frank Giliberti said.

According to a Medford Police report, Spencer was in an argument with another man in the basement of his Howard Road home when he allegedly turned violent. When a witness to the incident tried to break the two apart, Spencer grabbed a pair of electrical pliers and beat the other man about the head, according to the report, written by Medford Police Officer Joseph Byrnes.

Spencer fled the scene and was later arrested in Melrose. The victim had to be hospitalized due to the head injuries, Byrnes wrote.

Spencer was arraigned Oct. 15 in Somerville District Court, where he was release on personal recognizance.

The arbiter of Friday's hearing will be City Budget Director Stephanie Burke, Giliberti said.
