David Lubell of madeinmedford.com and a team of video camera-wielding Tufts University interns have been scouring the streets of Medford for weeks, ambushing unsuspecting residents and convincing them to belt out a bit of holiday caroling magic.

Today, the product of their efforts and a handful of independent submissions - a highlight video of the best (and worst) "Jingle Bells" renditions the city has to offer - goes live.

You may catch a friend or neighbor awkwardly stumbling through the classic Christmas tune, purported for decades to have been penned in Medford in 1850 by James Pierpont.

Or you may discover that a downtown shopkeeper or elected official has been hiding some unexpected vocal prowess.

The project is part of a collaboration between Comcast and six cities and towns across the country, and is aimed at promoting locally produced video content - like this highlight video of a summer of youth activities at the Middlesex Fells Reservation.

"It's something of a cross between YouTube and Medford Patch," said Lubell of madeinmedford.com.

The site doesn't charge for video submissions, but does ask that videos aren't overtly commercial or inappropriate.
