The Massachusetts Municipal Association has given Medford's "Go Green" environmental program an award for innovation, according to an announcement from the city.

The program aims to reduce the city's carbon footprint and to develop energy and environmental programs throughout the community, the announcement said. It was awarded the municipal association's Kenneth E. Pickard Innovation Award for its originality, cost effectiveness, efficiency, productivity and community satisfaction, the announcement said.

"The program has helped to define our city and put it on the map as a Green Community as recognized by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts," Mayor Michael McGlynn said in a statement.
