Supermarket chain Stop & Shop plans to open its new Medford location -- the former site of Johnnie's Foodmaster on Salem Street -- on Friday, according to an announcement from the company.

Since Johnnie's Foodmaster closed in November, Stop & Shop has worked quickly to renovate and convert the store at 471 Salem St. into one of its supermarkets. The store will employ about 100 people, including about 30 former employees of the Johnnie's Foodmaster, the announcement said. A grand opening is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday.

The store received final approval from Medford's Board of Health, Fire and Building Departments last week, according to a city official. It still needs to receive its common victualler license from the City Council, which is expected to consider it in its meeting Tuesday.

The storefront has been a supermarket since at least 1961 -- as far back as city records for the property go.
