Digital signs on I-93 keep drivers up to date during storm

Though the governor has ordered drivers to stay off the roads, those who must travel on interstates 93 and 495 will be getting digital billboard updates from the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency.

MEMA is utilizing Clear Channel Outdoor’s seven digital billboards in the Metro Boston area to provide critical safety messages before, during, and after the blizzard. 

The digital technology allows MEMA to adapt its messages in real-time to changing situations, providing a significant boost to its public safety effort and offer Massachusetts residents another way to get information.
 
Clear Channel Outdoor is making the digital signs available to MEMA at no cost, and is partnering with MEMA to provide access as needed during this dangerous storm.
 
The Blizzard of 2013 safety alerts will be displayed on all seven Clear Channel Outdoor digital billboards in Greater Boston, located along Interstate 93 in Medford and Stoneham, and Route 495 in Lawrence. 

The initial messages provide a Blizzard Warning and urge people to plan their travel in advance of the storm.  MEMA will utilize Clear Channel Outdoor’s digital technology to adapt the messages to reflect real-time changes during the height of the storm and during the critical post-storm clean-up period.
 
“This is a very dangerous storm and we want our citizens to properly prepare for this blizzard.  We are using digital billboards as one of several important ways to deliver critical information about the storm to residents,” said Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency Director Kurt Schwartz.  “We are pleased to partner with Clear Channel Outdoor to utilize this technology to keep people safe.
 
Clear Channel Outdoor often partners with public safety and law enforcement agencies to assist during critical situation, including Amber Alerts, FBI Most Wanted investigations, and storms such as the Blizzard of 2013.  The new digital billboard technology provides these agencies with the immediacy and flexibility to deliver effective messages that enhance public safety and benefit the community.
