The following was submitted by the Mayor McGlynn's Office:

Mayor Michael J. McGlynn cordially invites all citizens to attend the dedication ceremony for Medford veterans who have served in Operation Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, as their names are unveiled on a bronze plaque at Honor Roll Park.  The ceremony will take place on Sunday, November 3, 2013 at 1:00 PM, at Honor Roll Park, 489 Winthrop Street, Medford.

The event will feature the Mount Rushmore American Flag, which is nine stories high, or 45 foot by 90 foot flag, that will be raised by a crane as part of the ceremony.   In addition, members of the Massachusetts National Guard’s 101st Field Artillery Unit will accompany the raising of the flag with an official howitzer salute.  “This flag has been utilized at special events throughout the United States and the world.  The magnitude of the flag truly makes it something for all to see”, said the Mayor.

The Master of Ceremonies for the event will be Vietnam Veteran and triple amputee Dominic Marcellino, United States Marine, and recipient of the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.  He also serves as President of the Disabled and Limbless Veterans Association, Inc.

Medford’s Alumni Band, 40 members strong, will be providing music for the event.  Former members of Medford High School’s Band now play voluntarily at many city wide events throughout the year.  “We are all looking forward with great enthusiasm to play at this most important community event.  A number of our Alumni members have also played professionally for the Boston Pops, the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Artie Shaw Band.  We are honored the Mayor thought of us to participate in this very special ceremony to honor our veterans”, said Caron.

Seating will be provided.  People are urged to park at Medford High School.  Buses will be available to shuttle people to the site.  Please be advised that no parking will be allowed at Temple Shalom.

“This will be a memorable event for these veterans and their families.  It is my hope that our citizens will join with us as we thank these veterans for their dedication to duty, honor, country”, said Mayor McGlynn.
