Melrose Energy Commission bringing magic to the fair

The Melrose Energy Commission - a volunteer group promoting clean energy - is adding a little magic to the Fifth Annual Melrose Energy Fair, scheduled for Nov. 15 from noon to 5 p.m. at Memorial Hall.
In addition to businesses offering green tips and giveaways - the first 100 entrants will receive reusable Trader Joe's grocery bags - the Commission will bring in live entertainment.
Boston-based magician Peter O'Malley will perform his 45-minute set for youths, "Conservation Magic," which encourages children to recycle. He's performed the routine for the last 12 years, complete with singing and visual aids.
"I have this circle that turns into a triangle," he said. "And I say we can use it for the top of a roof of the bottom of a boat or the top of a rocket ship."
The set appeals to adults as well, according to Commission spokesman Howie Newman.
"I think what's really important is that this is a kid-oriented show, but older people like it also," Newman said. "[Recycling] kind of starts with the kids. Sometimes once they learn about it, that becomes part of their lifestyle and they bring it home to their parents. We thought it would be a kind of entertaining way to get our message out."
O'Malley has several acts in his repertoire, and he's entertained the likes of former Congressman Joe Kennedy, Sheik Yamani of Saudi Arabia, and the Massachusetts Port Authority, according to his website.
He believes that recycling - and spreading the word about it - is vitally important.
"We definitely need to do this," he said. "Everybody can do it."
Admission to the fair is free. Local groups will be staffing tables with information on saving energy, and guests can win home weatherization services and other prizes in a free raffle.
Starbucks and Shaw's will offer complimentary refreshments. The event is sponsored by National Grid.
