Melrose mayor on the run this weekend
Mayor Robert Dolan, whose cardio routine is well-documented, plans to run two road races this weekend in Melrose and Somerville.
"It's kind of like my marathon," said Dolan, a proud member of Melrose Boot Camp, a group that meets regularly in the early morning hours for outdoor aerobics. "This is a big weekend for me.''
It starts on Saturday at noon, when Dolan laces up his running shoes for the Assault on Mt. Hood, an annual, 3.75-mile race through the park to benefit Housing Families, a nonprofit based in Malden.
"I've been doing hills all week [to prepare],'' Dolan said, adding that his favorite outdoor jogging routes include parts of Clifton Park and Warwick Road.
But at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Dolan leaves the pristine confines of Mt. Hood behind, venturing into the urban grit of Somerville's Davis Square for the third annual Jingle Bell Run to benefit several area charities.
About 5,500 runners and walkers have registered for the event, and Dolan can't wait for the mad dash.
"It’s my first time," he said.
