The following is a letter to the editor from the Melrose Fire Department:

To the editor:

In February of 2010 The City of Melrose Fire Department was given the honor of being the Northeast region sponsor of Firefighter Near Miss training. When I received the list of requirements and space needs I groaned. How could I pull this off.

I paid a visit to High School Principal Joe Dillon and explained my dilemma. How do I train 25 Firefighters a day for 5 days, provide internet access, meals, parking all without disrupting the school environment. He took one look and said” I don’t see a problem.”

As the days began any time we had a minor problem the entire staff’s reply was “we will handle it” and they did. Not only did they impress the Fire Dept., the staff made the entire City of Melrose look good to many firefighters from across Massachusetts.

In addition to those listed above, a special thanks should go to Sue McBride for moving her class for a week allowing us to use her space. Asst principal Marianne Farrell for her help on Sunday setting up and constantly checking in. Frank Sorrenti for his help with Technology issues. Ken Dolce for feeding us. Honeydew Donuts for coffee every day. Last but not least were the students at Melrose High. They were all quiet, respectful and very welcoming to us outsiders.

Everyone in Melrose should be proud of their School Department.

Again Thank You,

John J. O’Brien
Chief of Department
