A Malden District Court hearing scheduled for Wednesday, June 30 in the case of an alleged child rapist from Melrose has been cancelled, and the case transferred to Middlesex Superior Court, Middlesex District Attorney's office spokeswoman Cara O'Brien said on Tuesday.

Francis Watt, 68, a truck driver from Melrose, faces charges of aggravated rape of a child, two counts of assault to rape a child, rape of a child with force, indecent assault and battery on a child under the age of 14, and enticement of a child under the age of 16.

His next court appearance will be a pre-trial hearing at Middlesex Superior Court in Woburn on Tuesday, July 13 at 9 a.m.

Watt is accused of sexually assaulting two girls, one of whom has special needs, on numerous occasions. One of the victims, who was under 14 at the time, reported the incidents to Melrose police in March and submitted a surveillance tape showing encounters between Watt and a second victim, who was 12 at the time. When interviewed by police, Watt admitted to abusing the second victim, the district attorney's office stated.

Watt was arrested March 23 and arraigned in Malden District Court on March 25. He was ordered held on $15,000 cash bail with the condition that he remain confined to his home with GPS monitoring with the exception of work, and that he have no contact with the alleged victims, potential witnesses, or children under the age of 16.

He was originally scheduled to appear in Malden District Court for a hearing on June 30, but that date was cancelled following his indictment by a Middlesex Superior Grand Jury on May 19, which effectively transferred the case to Superior Court, O'Brien said.
