Police captured a man in Stoneham this morning who was wanted for several sexual assaults in the Melrose-Wakefield area. The arrest came after a wild pursuit that began when the man allegedly attacked a woman in Melrose.

State Police Lieutenant Richard Sullivan arrested the suspect on Franklin Street near Weiss Farm about 10 a.m.

The drama started at 9:45 a.m. when Melrose Police asked for help from the State Police after the suspect allegedly attacked a woman at a Dunkin’ Donuts on the Fellsway.

Authorities said the suspect fled across the street and into wooded state property. State Police sent patrol units, K-9 units, and a helicopter to help in the search.

Sullivan, a veteran trooper, figured the man might go through the woods and come out on Franklin Street near the farm, State Police said in a statement. The man tried to run, but was quickly arrested. He was turned over to Stoneham police for booking and processing.

No further information was immediately available.
