The Melrose High School Drama Club recently performed an original play, Into the Darkness, at the Massachusetts High School Drama Festival held at the Manchester-Essex High School. The play was written as collaboration between MHS Drama Club advisor Timothy Daly and his students.  It was directed by Mr. Daly with technical assistance provided by David McCall.

The play involved an emotional examination of the lives that people lead, the choices that they make and the resulting consequences that they have faced. The play was very well received by the audience culminating in a standing ovation as well as several awards from the judges. Those students given recognition from the judges were Jessica Griffin for Costume Design, Patrick Hoff for Lighting/Lighting Design, Devin McCall for acting excellence in her role as Claire and Arielle Slatus, Maddie Konicek, Sydney Soucy and Caroline Kerwin for their roles in the Chorus.  The play can be viewed at this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOqsU1EBBKI&feature=channel.

The Massachusetts Drama Fest was established in 1931 and this year included 115 one-act plays produced by its member high schools. Drama Fest is open to every public, independent, and parochial high school in the Commonwealth. Through their participation in the Festival, students with interests in acting, directing, and technical theatre can gain valuable performance and production experience.

The Melrose Veteran’s Memorial Middle School Drama Club competes in the Middle School Drama Fest on Saturday, April 28th at the Blanchard Middle School in Westford. The 25 cast members will perform an adaptation of “Little Women,” which MVMMS drama director Brent Bueno wrote specifically for the competition. Previews of the play will be held at the Melrose Performing Arts Center located at 350 Lynn Fells Parkway in Melrose on Thursday, April 26th at 7pm and Friday, April 27th at 3pm, 5pm and 7pm. General admission for all is $5.
