Mass. Susan G. Komen affiliate awards grant to Hallmark Health

The Massachusetts Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® recently named its new slate of grant recipients. Komen MA presented 24 non-profit organizations in the Commonwealth with grants totaling over $900,000. As an organization, Susan G. Komen for the Cure® supports high-impact breast cancer programs in thousands of communities around the world. Each year, the Massachusetts Affiliate funds lifesaving programs throughout the Commonwealth.

Globally, Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is committed to the promise of saving lives and ending breast cancer forever by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all, and energizing science to find a cure. 

In Massachusetts, Komen MA is committed to the goal of ensuring 100% annual screening, access to care and follow-up for all residents by funding education, screening and treatment programs, with an emphasis on those facing barriers to care. Nearly eighty percent of the funds raised by Komen MA stay right here in our community, funding breast cancer prevention programs mentioned above.

Among those awarded a 2012 Komen MA grant is Hallmark Health System, Inc. (HHS), which has a multi-tiered project called “For the Best Health, Remember Breast Health 2012” that offers outreach and breast health education to diverse, unserved, underserved, and uninsured women, ages 20 to 39-plus. HHS aims to mail reminder letters to improve mammography screening rates for previously screened women, enhance navigation, financial counseling and support services, and also offer three special mammography screening events. Their ultimate goal is to further reduce screening no-show rates, increase screening in diverse populations, and educate 90% of mammography staff in cultural diversity, breast self-exam, and 1,000 women in breast health.

“Our grantees, such as HHS, are vehicles for change at the grass roots level, helping to break down barriers to care by providing services ranging from transportation to and from medical appointments and assisting with language and cultural challenges, to providing financial assistance with medical costs and helping families keep food on their tables,” says Jeanette Beltran, Director of Community Initiatives at Komen MA. “These programs allow us to serve the entire Affiliate coverage area statewide, and provide resources to ensure a continuum of care model.”

“Through the generous assistance from our partners and supporters, both in the public and private sector, we are able to provide grants to community-based organizations that deliver education, screening, and treatment programs to the most vulnerable residents of the Commonwealth,” added Beltran. “All the while, we remain committed to our vision of a world without breast cancer, as we have for more than 20 years."

Grants are awarded through a highly-competitive application process during which an independent panel of local experts reviews the applications for impact, feasibility, sustainability, and other criteria to ensure that those programs fitting Komen MA’s mission are funded. Once the grants are presented, they are carefully managed by Komen MA staff to ensure that funds are applied effectively, and leveraged for maximum community impact.
