A man walked up to the Shell gas station on Main Street in Melrose after midnight Monday with a stab wound requesting assistance, according to Melrose Police.

The man, who was not identified, was transported to an area hospital, said Melrose Police Lieutenant Mark Decroteau.

The man told police he was stabbed in an altercation in Malden, but Decroteau declined to elaborate, citing the ongoing investigation by Malden Police, which is handling the case.

The man's condition is unknown, and Malden Police could not be reached for comment.
