Melrose mourns loss of Peter Garipay

The City of Melrose is mourning the loss of Peter Garipay, longtime Melrose school administrator. The following is an obituary prepared by the Gately Funeral Home:

garipay.jpgPeter Ellsworth Garipay passed away at his home in Melrose, after a lengthy illness, on Oct. 16, surrounded by his loving family. He was 71 years of age.

Peter was born in Lynn and grew up on the Kiley Farm in Melrose. He graduated from Melrose High School, Class of 1958, Merrimack College, Class of 1963 and received his Masters in Secondary School Administration from Salem State College in 1970.

A lifelong resident of Melrose, Mr. Garipay started teaching math at the Coolidge School in Melrose in 1965. He was assistant principal of Melrose Middle School from 1972-1992 and then assistant principal at Melrose High School from 1993 until his retirement in 2002.

Peter also worked part time for the MJ Connolly & Sons Co. for over 25 years. He was a member of the National Association of Secondary School Principals, Past President of Melrose Association of School Administration, member of Massachusetts Teachers' Association, past president and board member of the Melrose YMCA and served on the Wyoming Cemetery Commission for over 20 years.

Mr. Garipay has been a lifelong member of St. Mary's Church in Melrose; he was a member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society for over 30 years and was a Boy Scout Leader for Troop 635 at Incarnation Church. He enjoyed golfing, gardening, and was a big Notre Dame Football fan.

Peter loved spending time with his family at Lake Wentworth in Wolfeboro, N.H., traveling with his wife Maurine and was completely dedicated to his three grandchildren. Mr. Garipay was the loving husband of 44 years to Maurine E. (Connolly) Garipay. Devoted father of Michael Garipay of Las Vegas, formerly of Chicago; Mark Garipay and his wife Andrea of Melrose, and John Garipay and his wife Jill of Stoneham. Cherished grandfather of Nicholas Boulay, Sydney Garipay, and Tyler Garipay. Beloved brother of Carol Carilli and her husband Joseph of Wolfeboro, N.H., Paul Garipay and his wife Patricia of Aurora, Colo., and Janet Urquhart of Tewksbury. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, family members, and friends.

Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose was held on Monday, Oct. 22 at 9 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial followed at St. Mary's Church, Herbert St. Melrose. Interment was at Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Peter's name to the St. Vincent DePaul Society, 46 Myrtle St. Melrose, MA 02176 or to the Peter E. Garipay Charitable Fund, c/o Melrose Cooperative Bank, 638 Main St. Melrose, MA 02176.
