The state School Building Authority has awarded a $3.1 million grant to renovate Melrose High School's science labs.

The grant was the largest of three awards given out by the state in an effort to bulster lagging high school science facilities.

Melrose Mayor Robert Dolan last week submitted plans to the Board of Aldermen to borrow the remaining $3.4 million of the $6.5 million price tag to renovate the labs.

"Districts taking part in the program ... are investing in otherwise sound high school facilities by focusing on prototype designs for science labs," said Jack McCarthy, the school building authority's executive director.

"This targeted use of funds greatly increases the overall effectiveness of the Authority."

Also named in the round of funding was Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School and Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School.
