Jim Halligan of the Melrose Rotary presents Mayor Rob Dolan a check.

Melrose's emergency fund has nearly doubled in recent weeks, thanks largely to a donation from the Melrose Rotary Club, according to an announcement from the city.

A $3,000 donation from the rotary brought the fund's total up to $18,000 as of Dec. 11, according to the announcement. The fund had a balance of about $10,000 at the beginning of the month.

The fund is used to help residents pay for basic needs such as groceries, gas, and heat. The rotary's donation will be used to purchase fuel oil, the announcement said.

Donations to the fund can be mailed to: Melrose Emergency Fund, Mayor's Office, 562 Main St., Melrose, Mass. 02176, or brought directly to Mayor Rob Dolan's office on the second floor of City Hall.

For more information about the fund, call 781-979-4440.
