Donations to the Melrose Emergency Fund since November have surpassed $40,000, according to an announcement from Mayor Rob Dolan's office.

Donations were up nearly $10,000 since Dec. 18, the last time the city provided an update.
The fund is used to help residents pay for basic needs like groceries, gas and heat on a one-time basis. About 400 Melrose families have received assistance since the fund was established in 2009.

Among those who contributed donations was the Peter E. Garipay Foundation, set up in memory of the former high school vice principal, the announcement said.

"We are truly fortunate to live in such a caring community, where even in the busy holiday time, so many people are willing to remember their neighbors in need," Dolan said in a written statement. "These donations will go toward our goal that no Melrose resident will go hungry or cold this winter."

Donations to the fund can be mailed to: Melrose Emergency Fund, Mayor's Office, 562 Main St., Melrose, Mass. 02176, or brought directly to Mayor Rob Dolan's office on the second floor of City Hall.
