Milton lawyer Robert L. Jubinville has announced he is running again in the Democratic primary for the District 2 seat on the Governor’s Council, and he challenged the incumbent to debate him.
Jubinville, 63, lost two years ago to Kelly Timilty, of Dedham, who has served on the Governor’s Council for 18 years. In the final days of the 2008 campaign, her campaign sent out a flier claiming she had Governor Deval Patrick’s support and faking his signature; she later was fined $8,000 for the forged endorsement.
“The people of District 2 have a right to ask her questions concerning her illegal activity from the last election,” Jubinville said in a press release Tuesday. “Her candidacy this election is an insult because she believes she can get another free ride on the Timilty name. She is trying to fool the voters again. If she wins this election, she qualifies for a state pension that voters will pay for the rest of her life.”
Jubinville also criticized Timilty’s poor attendance record at council meetings.
Timilty’s father, Joseph Timilty, is a former state senator and Boston city councilor. Her brother James E. is a state senator, and her cousin Walter F. is a state representative. She did not immediately respond on Thursday to telephone and e-mail requests for comment.
The Governor's Council consists of eight elected members and the lieutenant governor. The panel confirms or rejects the governor's nominations for the judiciary, considers pardons and commutations, and reviews government spending orders.
Jubinville, who lives in Milton, is a defense lawyer with offices in Milton, Falmouth, and Holyoke. An Army veteran of the Vietnam era, he was a state trooper and detective, going to Suffolk University School of Law at night to become a trial lawyer.
He has been campaigning for the Sept. 14 Democratic primary since late last year.
The district includes Milton, Canton, Dedham, Foxborough, Norwood, Randolph, Sharon, Stoughton, Westwood, parts of Boston, Braintree, East Bridgewater, Easton and Wellesley, as well as 25 other communities.
