Hometown candidate Richard Livingston won big in Milton, but lost all the other towns in the state Senate district to Canton Selectman Robert Burr in the Republican primary.

Burr will face incumbent Democrat Brian Joyce of Milton in the November election.

“I wish Bob the best,” Livingston said. “I worked very hard and did the best I could possibly do. I want to thank all my supporters, and I will continue to work hard to see to it that the ideas I brought up come to fruition.”

Livingston, a former Town Meeting member, polled 611 votes in Milton, more than twice as many as the 283 cast for Burr.

But Burr pulled in 843 votes in Canton, to Livingston’s 182, and had big margins in Stoughton, East and West Bridgewater, Avon, Randolph, and Sharon.

The votes were closer in Braintree (247 for Burr to 239 for Livingston), but with 43 of 47 precincts reporting last night, Burr led Livingston 2,903 to 1,704.

“Our strategy was going down to door -- 2,500 doors -- in one of the warmest summers on record, and that helped,” Burr said. “There’s still a lot of work to be done between now and the general election to help get us back to the two-party system, but I’m happy tonight.”

Close to 33 percent of Milton’s 17,645 registered voters came out for the primary. Of the 5,762 votes cast, 4,709 were for Democrats and 1,049 for Republicans.

Joyce, who had no opposition in the primary, received 2,998 votes in Milton.

Milton voters went with the local but losing candidate in the race for Governor’s Council, as well. Incumbent Kelly Timilty won in the district with 60 percent of the vote, but Milton voters gave Milton lawyer Robert Jubinville 2,700 votes and Timity 1,296.
