Design firm holds contest for nonprofits seeking free web work
Offering free services to help worthy, cash-strapped groups get a grip on their websites has been a part of Jackrabbit Design’s philosophy since it started, CEO David Belyea says.
But the Milton-based brand and graphic design company is taking that commitment to a new level for some lucky nonprofit group with a contest called “Carrots for a Cause,” because, he says, “giving back is delicious.”
The firm’s first, official pro-bono initiative is aimed at helping one Massachusetts nonprofit organization reach a larger audience by developing a new corporate website valued up to $50,000. For free.
The competition runs through Sept. 30. The winner will be announced on Oct. 10.
Qualifying submissions to “Carrots for a Cause” will need to relay the organization’s mission and role within the community, as well as indicate how a new website might help to elevate its presence and impact. Organizations can submit a photo or video to help visually depict their mission and work.
“A lot of these groups struggle to get anything done,’’ Belyea said.
Many are forced to hire web designers that may not be best suited to their needs because, basically, they have no money. Nonprofit websites need to be structured differently, so it’s easy to collect money, or get messages out to specific groups.
“We hear horror stories of things gone bad,’’ he said. “We are looking for organizations with true dedication to their mission that give back to the community at a local or national level in a unique way.”
Belyea said he and his staff will winnow down the applicants to about 10 or so from which a winner will be chosen.
The company has worked with a range of nonprofits including International Rett Syndrome Foundation, The Boston Red Sox Foundation, and Horizons for Homeless Children. It has also offered its services to the Milton Public Schools.
Nonprofits that are interested in being considered for the free web work can enter the contest on Jack Rabbit’s website at http://www.jumpingjackrabbit.com/carrotsforacause/.
