A group of Milton residents have formalized an organization they hope will help teens in need throughout town with items such as clothing, college and prom application fees, and anything else needed around the holidays or in spring.

The group, which calls itself the "Milton Student Activities Fund," will have a kick-off fund-raising event Saturday, Nov. 26, at the Milton Women’s Club on Reedsdale Road from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Proceeds from the event will be distributed to teens at both the middle and high school for holidays and upcoming expenses.

In January, the group will form an official board to oversee a fund to support the teens throughout the year, said organizer John Phelan.

“Two members of the board will be guidance counselors from the middle and high schools; they have their finger on the pulse of the families in need,” Phelan said. “But for us, it will be a blind donation.”

In previous years, the group, along with staff from the schools, have come together informaly to donate money to various students. Last year they pulled together $400 for a student who needed to put a deposit on a dorm room for college.

“There’s a lot of organizations who support the parents, but there’s a niche here of kids who need help, too,” Phelan said.

Saturday’s event will be run by three Milton couples and will include an auction, music, dancing, appetizers, and a cash bar. The cost is $20 at the door, and all proceeds will go to teens who need help this winter. Leftover money will be put toward spring activities.

Monetary donations in advance of the event or after are also accepted; checks should be made out to “The Milton Student Activities Fund” and sent to:
